"Threshold"

Princeton University Chapel commission of two 25-feet (8 meter) paintings on silk to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the University.

In 1997, I enjoyed a visit to the Princeton University Chapel after being commissioned to create two paintings on silk to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the University. The patterns of light created by the windows were quite beautiful, especially those of the Adlai E. Stevenson '22 window designed by Ellen Simon. I was drawn to the curvilinear shapes of the arches and also the carved woodwork of the chancel organ case. Some of these motifs are echoed in Threshold, the paintings created for this time of culmination and anticipation. The pieces can be viewed as ascending and focusing attention upward. They may also be seen as descending and radiating. In either case, I see them as symbols for the flux where transformation occurs.
